Wisdom Teeth Extractions

A man holding an extracted wisdom tooth while touching his jaw in pain, with a digital label indicating 'Wisdom Tooth.'One of the most common surgeries in the United States is wisdom teeth extractions. Wisdom teeth are often referred to as third molars, and they typically start coming through around age 16 or 17. At Greater Ohio Oral & Facial Surgery, we have noted some people may need surgery because their wisdom teeth don't come up enough to be seen from the outside; others may need surgery if they're impacted, meaning it's difficult for them to erupt out of your gums. If you have wisdom teeth that are troubling you, Greater Ohio Oral & Facial Surgery can help.

How Do Wisdom Teeth Affect Your Oral Health?

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars in your mouth that typically contact other teeth as you chew. They can be impacted, which means they don't erupt and make a normal appearance, or partially erupted, so only some of the tooth is visible when viewed from the front. Wisdom tooth extractions are often necessary to prevent further complications related to these teeth, such as cysts, gum disease, abscesses, and headaches due to pressure on sensitive areas around nerves during chewing. There may not be any signs right away, but they usuallly develop over time.

What Are The Signs That You Might Need Your Wisdom Teeth Extracted?

There are several signs that you should come to see us for wisdom tooth extraction. The first is facial pain. If you have been experiencing a lot of pain in the jaw area and it just won't go away, that could indicate that your wisdom teeth are impacted. Another sign to look out for is swelling on one side of the face or swollen lymph nodes. This usually indicates infection because there's pus trapped behind your teeth which eventually will need to come out. If you notice any change in how much food fits into your mouth, this may also mean that your wisdom teeth have erupted. You can ask us about x-rays to get a better idea of what's going on before extracting them and if it's necessary.

Tips For Recovering After A Wisdom Tooth Extraction Surgery

A few days after a wisdom teeth extraction surgery, the patient may experience soreness and swelling in their gums, cheeks, or chin. It is important to follow all of our instructions about what you can eat during that period. If you are prescribed pain medication for the discomfort, it should help with some of these symptoms. Try not to disturb the area too much; avoid brushing or touching this area for at least 24 hours following surgery. If possible, use wet gauze instead around the mouth area when necessary to clean up while healing so as not to disrupt any stitches being used by us.
