Orthognathic Surgery

However, this procedure can give you just that: a beautiful smile! Here at Greater Ohio Oral & Facial Surgery, we are experts in all things dental and want to provide as much information for our patients as possible.

What Is Orthognathic Surgery?

Orthognathic surgery, sometimes called corrective jaw surgery or treatment of the jaw, involves altering the position and alignment of a person's upper and lower teeth to correct problems with facial appearance. This procedure may also be used for other dental concerns, such as when people have trouble breathing through their mouth because they have an overbite or underbite. This operation aims to improve your appearance by moving your top row of teeth in front so that they are aligned more closely with your bottom row, and making sure you can breathe easier.

The first step typically requires braces to straighten any misaligned teeth. Once those are installed, we will use a series of X-rays and scans to map out where the teeth need to be moved. We can then create an orthodontic appliance that is custom fitted for you with metal brackets attached.

The braces are held in place by these brackets, which force your top row of molars forward on the jaw but can sometimes restrict breathing, or if you bite down hard enough it hurts. Once those appliances have been installed, you may wear them anywhere from several months to two years before undergoing surgery. During this time, your mouth needs time to continue adjusting so that when the device is removed, it is ready for permanent changes.

Who Should Get Orthognathic Surgery?

People who have a significant deviation in their bite (overbite, underbite, cross-bites) can benefit from orthognathic surgery which is performed through an incision hidden inside the mouth and down along the gum line of the jawbone(s). The orthodontist then reshapes these bones with braces or surgery while you are awake; this is often pain-free. This may be necessary if your teeth cannot meet properly when biting because of crowded jaws or misaligned bites.

This procedure has been shown to significantly improve appearance and self-confidence as it eliminates gaps between front teeth and improves chewing ability for those who grind their teeth during sleep. It also helps restore normal breathing patterns for those limited in their ability to open their mouth.

The surgery is typically short and requires a few days of recovery time after the procedure. Still, many people find that orthognathic surgery does not disrupt daily life nearly as much as braces would have due to its quick healing process.

What is the Average Recovery Time?

The recovery time for adults is approximately three months. For teenagers, the recovery time can vary from eight to 12 weeks. A teen's bones continue growing and changing until about age 21; as a result, their jaws may be set differently in relation to adults after surgery. This difference might complicate healing or change the angle of jaw growth post-surgery.
